Ancient Studies students enroll in courses offered by the three
participating departments (
Classical
Studies, History
of Art, and Near and
Middle Eastern Civilizations). Please contact the specific department
for a list of available courses for the current academic year.
The Ancient Studies Program offers one course recently developed by
the committee. The Joint Ancient Interconnections (JAI) course
is designed for and complements the interdisciplinary nature of the program.
The course draws on expertise in the three contributing departments and
enriches the historical, cultural and archaeological offerings of all three,
for students outside as well as inside the Program.
The following JAI Courses have been offered in past years:
JAI 1000H: The Eastern Mediterranean During the Middle and Late Bronze
Age Period
JAI 1005H: The Empires of Persia and Athens: The Achaemenid Period
(ca. 550-330 B.C.)
The Achaemenid Empire extended from India to the shores of the Mediterranean,
representing the first world system of the West. Evidence for its structures
and ideology is derived from both Near Eastern and Classical Greek texts,
and from several sub-disciplines of archaeology. One school of thought
views the fifth- century Athenian Empire as at least partially structured
on the model of the Achaemenid East; certainly there is evidence of Athenian
receptivity to the Achaemenid world.
